Mikayla Clifford scored twice and
Jade Poon scored the sudden victory golden goal as 11th ranked Cal State Stanislaus Warriors took a 3-2 win at California Baptist Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.
Poon, a freshman from Sacramento, collected a rebound off the post for the winner at 92:51 to lift the Warriors. Cal State Stanislaus has now won 17 straight regular season games dating back to the start of the 2013 season. The Warriors also improved to 15-0-2 in away contests since the start of the 2012 campaign.
"Mikayla had a fantastic game taking players on and scored two fantastic goals." Warriors head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "Jade was dynamic the entire game. It's impossible to tell she is a freshman. She plays with a lot of convince and absolutely buried the goal in OT. "
Poon became the first true freshman to start on opening day since 2010 when
Karenee Demery and
Emily Relles started their illustrious careers.
After giving up a score in the first 34 seconds of the match, the Warriors battled back. Clifford even the score in the 25th minute finishing off a long pass from
Lauren Thornton.
Cal Baptist went up 2-1 on an own goal in the 27th minute but Clifford again tied the score with 10 minutes left to play in the first half. This time it was a set-play from a
Sabrina Williamson corner to
Katelyn Nebesnick, who flicked it to Clifford for the pretty scoring sequence.
"When you give up a goal in the first minute and then score on yourself it really takes a lot of mental toughness to battle back. One of the things I admire about our team and program is incredible self belief. That showed today," Bolton added.
The teams battled to a scoreless second half with the Warriors out-shooting the Lancers, 9-5, but came up empty. That's until about three minutes into the overtime period when Williamson took a shot that bounced off the post to a waiting Poon for the finish and the sudden victory.
"Offensively we created a lot of chances and really were explosive in the final third of the field," commented Bolton. "I'm very proud of our effort today. We battled back numerous times and pulled out a great victory on the road against a great team."
California Baptist was a NCAA Championship tournament qualifying team a season ago and played its first round match at Warrior Stadium. The Lancers are expected to repeat as Pacific West Conference winners this year. Kimberly Allard scored CBU's only goal 34 seconds into the match.
