TURLOCK — Five Warriors scored in double figures and
Rob Walters recorded back-to-back double-doubles as Cal State Stanislaus held off Humboldt State to win 70-66 Saturday night at Fitpzatrick Arena.
Walters again led the Warriors with 16 points and 11 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double night as Stanislaus improved to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors remain tied for first, now with just one team, as Cal Poly Pomona beat Sonoma State in a battle of firsts down in Pomona.
Alek Carlson netted 12 points, including three three-pointers, and
Chris Read added 11 points and nine rebounds. Contributing to the total team effort also were
Wes Bartole and
Christian Bayne, each with 10 points.
Shey Mataele, who made four clutch free throws in the final seven seconds, finished with eight rebounds.
Humboldt State ended a six-game winning streak and dropped to 9-5 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks were led by Austin Bryan with 17 points. Allan Guei added 16 points and eight rebounds. Bryan scored 15 of this points in the first half, when he nailed four of five three-pointers. Bryan was 0-for-5 from arch in the second half.
During a two-minute stretch early in the second half, a 9-0 Stanislaus run turned a five-point HSU lead into a four-point Warriors advantage after a Carlson trey and a pair of Bartole free throws made it 51-47 at 10:53. HSU would tie the game again at 51-51, but the Warriors used another 7-0 spur to gain a 58-51 lead. Carlson again mixed in a three-pointer and Read capped the rally with a jumper.
Humboldt State would rally back, but Guei's layup at 2:30 was the 'Jacks final field goal until a three-pointer by Guei with three seconds left to play. In between Lumberjack buckets, Bayne scored four points and Mataele was 4-for-4 at the line in the final seven seconds to help Stanislaus hold on for the lead.
Walters, who spent a season as a HSU redshirt in 2011-12, was 6 of 13 Saturday night. In two games this weekend, the senior forward had two double-doubles, shot 61 percent (14-for-23) with 36 points and 25 rebounds.
The Warriors, so far 2-0 on this four-game homestand, will host Sonoma State and San Francisco State next Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
