Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Toros charge turned tight game into 13-point CSUDH win

TURLOCK — Against one of the best teams in the conference, and facing one of the top scorers, the short-handed Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team stayed in the game until a late Toros charge.

In the end, the Warriors lost to second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills, 65-52, to fall to 5-12 overall and 3-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Breanne Garcia led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 22 points as the Toros improved to 16-5 and 11-2 in the CCAA. CSUDH stayed tied with Cal Poly Pomona in second place, one game behind Humboldt State.

For Cal State Stanislaus, which was without scorers Camille Roberts and Briana Cotton on the night, hung in the game for most of the night and trailed by just one-point, 36-35, at 16:50 in the second half. Stanislaus led by as many as six points with about four to play in the first half after back-to-back three-pointers by Alysa Valentine and Morgan Roots.

But, the one-point margin at 16:50 was as close as the Warriors got.

The Toros used a 11-3 run to build an 8-point lead at 8:21. Another 8-point run under the six-minute mark made it a 16-point game, the Toros' biggest lead at 61-45 with 3:03 to go.

The Warriors filled some scoring void with Aleseana Whitney, who scored 12 points off the bench. Valentine, who made two three-pointers, finished with 10 points. Jasmine Washington chipped in nine points to the team's totals. Erika Larsen grabbed 11 rebounds in her second start of her career.

Garcia entered the week as the CCAA's fifth best scorer at 14.1 points per game. She netted her 22 on 7 of 11 shooting with three triples and five free throws. Talia Rayford (13 points, 12 rebounds) and Monay Lee (11 points, 11 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for Cal State Dominguez Hills.
