TURLOCK — It wasn't very pretty, but the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team got it done with another victory at home. The Warriors recovered from a low scoring night just enough to hang on for a 53-48 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night.
Shey Mataele led the Warriors with 14 points — most of them came late in the game on free throws — and
Christian Bayne scored 13 points as Cal State Stanislaus remains in a three-way tie for first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Mataele also had a season-high seven assists.
The Warriors are now 13-5 overall and 10-3 in conference play. They are also 6-1 in home games at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, where they have won five straight on home floor. But, four of these five wins didn't come easy. Aside from the convincing 14-point win over San Francisco State on Jan. 17, the Warriors have won by an average margin of just four points in those four wins.
Friday night, the Warriors led by only as many as five points throughout the game with the first coming at 13:18 in the second half. Stanislaus were coming off a 32.1 percent shooting first half with the score at 23-21 at the break.
Fortunately, the last place Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-14, 1-12 CCAA) also didn't have much offense going.
Stanislaus had another off-night on offense, even with the return of
Tyler Barber (out with an injury since Dec. 13). The Warriors ended up with a 36 percent shooting night and just 3 of 13 from the 3-point arch. At the foul line, they were 14 of 24 — and that number was padded after Mataele made five of six in the final 75 seconds to keep the Warriors ahead.
Bayne also helped at the free throw line as the freshman connected on all six attempts for his 13 points.
Rob Walters fought hard to earn another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also had three blocks and two steals on his stat line. Walters left the Arena with bandages on his right eye and an ice pack on his right elbow after hitting the floor several times.
Mataele's layup at 2:23 to go turned out to be the Warriors final field goal. In fact, Stanislaus made just two buckets (the other a
Chris Read jumper at 5:04) after Barber nailed a three-pointer at 7:49 left to give the Warriors a 40-35 lead.
Dominguez Hills, which shot just 30.4 percent on the night (27.3 in the second half), was led by Justin Sadler's 15-point, 10-rebound effort. Darnell Martin also pulled 13 rebounds as the Toros out-rebounded the Warriors 43-33. Ivan Dooley, who leads the team with 13.1 points a game, was 0-for-10 on the night (0-for-7 from 3-point range).
Saturday night, the Warriors host Cal State L.A. in hopes to run the home-win streak to six games. They will also try to keep with with Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State in the three-way tie atop of the CCAA standings.
