TURLOCK — In a rematch of last year's CCAA Championship title game, Cal Poly Pomona prevailed again at Warrior Stadium as the Broncos took a 2-0 win over Stanislaus State on Sunday.
The match had little action until late in the second half before a penalty kick goal and a loose ball led to the two Pomona scores. The set-back meant the Warriors fell to 10-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. It is the first weekend that the Warriors was unable to come away with a win as they tied Cal State San Bernardino, 2-2, on Friday.
Cal Poly Pomona, on the other hand, had a nice road trip weekend with two wins. The Broncos had defeated Cal State East Bay, 2-1, on Friday, and are now 6-1-3 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play.
The Warriors had a chance to take over first place in the standings on Sunday with first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills off. Instead, they will remain in second with 16 points.
Stanislaus and Pomona met last year in the CCAA title match here at Warrior Stadium and played to a 1-1 tie. The Broncos earned the championship and the automatic berth for the NCAA tournament by winning the PK shootout, 3-0.
On Sunday, the stalemate lasted until 76:30 when Pomona was awarded a penalty kick after a Bronco was tripped up in the box in the middle of three Stan State defenders. Mathew Perez converted on the easy score to make it 1-0. Less than three minutes later, Patricio Yrizar found a loose ball in the box after players from both sides knocked the ball around on the far side. Yrizar took a couple of dribbles and blasted the shot past
Russ Klabough for the 2-0 score.
The Warriors had three shots on goal, all of them picked up by Fernando Pablo Quevedo.
Stanislaus State will take a break from CCAA action this coming week with a non-conference match on Wednesday against UC Santa Cruz. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
