Golden Eagles golden against Stan State in OT

TURLOCK — In another brillant match between Stanislaus State and Cal State L.A. late in the season, it was the Golden Eagles trotting away from Warrior Stadium with a 2-1 overtime victory Thursday night.

Herbert Biste scored twice for Cal State L.A., including the sudden-victory winner four minutes into the first extra period, to lift the visiting team as the Golden Eagles improved to 10-3-2 overall and 7-3-1 in conference play. The 7-3-1 mark is the same as the Warriors' record as the two teams are now tied for third in the standings. With one regular season match left to play, the jockeying for seed position for the coming CCAA Championships continues.

The Warriors, which face first-place and unbeaten Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, could still move up to second place with a win and losses by Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. That would mean a first-round bye to start the postseason tournament on Tuesday. Otherwise, the Warriors will host a "play-in" match as the No. 3 or No. 4 seed.

Stanislaus State (13-3-1 overall), ranked No. 4 in this week's NCAA West Region poll, scored the equalizer in the 31st minute with two nice headers. Gerardo Cazares sent in a long service to the far side for a Jose Ramirez header which bounced off the cross bar. Josue Barajas was there for the rebound with another header for the goal to make it 1-1.

Biste's first goal happened at 12:49 as he beat Stanislaus goalie Russ Klabough when he came out to challenge the shooter. For the game-winner at 94:03, Biste chest-pump-in the score after a beautifully placed long ball from Kaan Gultorak to the penalty kick dot.

Klabough had perhaps his best game of the season in terms of great saves. He recorded a season-high with eight saves and most of them done with arobatic moves or grabs out of the air from hard shots. He also had a kick-save from a point-blank range attempt that kept the match even.

Saturday's regular season finale against fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills is at 7 p.m. The Toros remain undefeated during CCAA play at 9-0-2 after Thursday's 1-0 win at Cal State East Bay. It will be senior night for Stanislaus with nine Warriors being recognized. This senior class includes Brady Taylor, Ramiro Ceja, Daniel Kuczynski, Barajas, Cazares, Ramirez, Christian Madrigal, Klabough and Alex Valdovinos.
