Warriors grab final CCAA tournament spot on senior night

TURLOCK — Heading into Saturday evening's match on senior night, the Warriors knew that they control their own tournament fate: Beat the Toros and get into the postseason.

Stanislaus State took control of the match early en route to a 3-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. In doing so, the Warriors grabbed the final spot in the CCAA Women's Soccer Championship tournament. Humboldt State had lost at Cal State San Bernardino earlier in the day, opening the opportunity for Stan State.

The Warriors will make their sixth appearance in the CCAA tournament. It will be the program's fifth trip since 2010. As the No. 6 seed, the Warriors travel to No. 3 seed Cal State L.A. for the first round match on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The other first round match will feature Cal Poly Pomona at UC San Diego with the two winners advancing to the semifinals at Cal Poly Pomona next weekend.

"This team has had to overcome incredible adversity this year. I couldn't be happier for our seniors and the rest of our players," head coach Gabriel Bolton said.

Appropriately on senior night, it was senior — and team's leading scorer — Jordan Moineau who got the Warriors' scoring. In the 17th minute, Moineau scored a 1-v-1 goal after getting a through ball from Maryssa McDuffy to make it 1-0. Moineau now has a team-best seven goals. She also has five assists and 19 points, also a team-best.

Stanislaus' second goal scored by Amanda Woodhouse was set up beautifully by another senior Nichole Donald. Donald's long pass from the back of the field was placed perfectly in the attack zone for Demi Gonis, who beat a defender and passed to Woodhouse for the goal.

"We've been creating lots of chances the last few games. It was great to put some of those opportunities away tonight," Bolton added.

In the second half, Kirsten Coleman capped-off the Warriors' scoring with an unassisted goal at 68:30. After receiving a pass in open field from McDuffy, Coleman dribbled half of the field and blast it to the left post for her seventh score of the year.

Stan State goalkeeper Chelsea Lewandowski, also a senior, had another stellar game with five saves and a shutout. She now has 7-and-a-half shutouts this season, giving her 26.5 for her career, just one shy of tying Breanna Vaughan's career record.

"The effort defensively by the entire team tonight was outstanding.  Dominguez had some very skillful players and threw lots of players forward in the final 20 minutes. It was great to see our toughness," said Bolton.
