Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Chico State edges Stanislaus in extra time thriller

CHICO — The Stanislaus State women's soccer team lost in overtime for just the second time since the beginning of the 2011 season as Chico State edged the Warriors 2-1 Sunday at University Stadium.

The Warriors played in their fourth extra-period match of the season this season but a Wildcats goal in the 106th minute handed Stan State its first back-to-back Sunday loss since 2009. The current Warriors are now 7-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

Chico State, which has won six of its last seven matches, improved to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in CCAA play.

"It was a good game between two excellent teams. It's always fun to play in these rivalries. I'm proud of the way we played," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "Sometimes it just comes down to making one more play. Chico did that today."

Stanislaus took 17 shots against the Wildcats in regular season, out-shooting Chico State, 17-7, but seven saves were recorded by Chico goalie Mackenzie Boulton to keep the match tied after 90 minutes.

Lindsey Dias scored twice for Chico State in the match as she got Chico on the board in the 23rd minute with her third goal of the year. However, Amanda Woodhouse sent in the equalizer in the 38th minute for Stanislaus. After Maryssa McDuffy dribbled around a defender, her pass to Moineau for a shot that was parried away to Woodhouse, who finished to the open net.

"Mandy has worked very hard the last 18 months to come back from injury. Every week she has gotten better and better," Bolton said. "It was great to see her get a goal today. She framed the goal just like we always talk about."

Stanislaus State is now 10-2-1 in overtime matches since the start of the 2011 season — both losses to Chico State as the Wildcats also defeated the Warriors in double overtime last season.

Defensively, Stan State kept Chico in check as well to keep the match tight. Bella Rivera was one of the defensive stars, according to Bolton: "Bella played some critical minutes today. She was fantastic on the ball and made critical plays defensively."

Dias scored the game-winner at 105:44 from a Pooja Patel, who assisted on the first goal as well, to end the match.

The Warriors will enjoy three straight home matches beginning on Friday when they host Cal State San Bernardino on Greek Night and Pack the House Night at Warriors Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on Friday.
