TURLOCK — It didn't necessary show up in the stats, but the blocking made the difference as a determined Stanislaus State volleyball team avenged Saturday's loss in Chico with an impressive victory over the same Wildcats on Tuesday at Fitzpatrick Arena.
After falling in three very tight sets on Saturday in Chico, the Warriors rebounded at home with an entertaining sweep over Chico State, 26-24, 25-17, 25-22, to earn their 10th victory of the season. The Warriors improved to 10-5 overall and 4-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Chico State, which had won eight of last nine over the Warriors in this rivalry series, is now 14-5, 6-3 CCAA.
The 10-win season is Stanislaus State's first since 2010 when that team went 13-14. Stan State has 11 regular season matches remaining starting with a pair of home contests this weekend against Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal Poly Pomona.
Tuesday night, the Warriors out-blocked Chico State 12-8 (total) on the stat sheet — but they also had many uncharted block-zeros which continued play and extended rallies that mostly went their way.
Lindsay Skadeland led the home side with four blocked assists while
Taylor Massengale and
Courtney Lewis each assisted on three.
There were also a few more net-plays that ended up as kills in favor of the Warriors.
In the end, Massengale led with 15 kills on a very solid hitting night, going 15 for 27 with just one error (.519 attacking percentage). Lewis went .444 with five kills and Skadeland had 11 kills (.375).
Blair Ehrlich smashed away eight kills.
Defensively, libero
Sarah Crowl had 19 digs.
Maddi Seidl (14) and Ehrlich (12) were also in double digits in digs. Seidl kept up with her assists per set pace with 32 more.
Stanislaus pulled away late in the second set and rolled to a convincing win that included three kills by Massengale to account for the Warriors' final three points. In the third, the Warriors rallied from down 14-9 and finally took over the momentum at 18-18 before scoring 7 of the final 11 points to win. Skadeland had three of her kills during the comeback that finally pushed Stanislaus ahead at 22-18.
Chico State was led by Shannon Boling and Shelby Frank each with 12 kills. Olivia Mediano, one of the top outside hitters in the CCAA who averages nearly four kills per set, was held to five kills.
