Tournament-bound Warriors beat HSU, snag No. 7 seed

ARCATA — It will be a rough ride home along the curves of Highway 101, but it will be a happy one as Stanislaus State wrap-up the regular season with a 3-1 win over Humboldt State inside the tough-to-win Lumberjack Arena.

The Warriors capped off a remarkable-turnaround 2015 regular season under first-year head coach Mallori Gibson-Rossi with 16-10 overall and 10-10 conference records — best marks for the program since 2002.

In a matter of four days, the Warriors will go from the northern part of the state of Humboldt County to the southern-tip in San Diego for the inaugural CCAA conference tournament — and that's perfectly okay with them.

Stanislaus State will be the No. 7 seed in the inaugural CCAA championships, which starts on Thursday, in La Jolla on the campus of UC San Diego. The Warriors' opponent? Cal State San Bernardino — a team they upset just last week when they beat the No. 17 Coyotes for the first time in 15 years. The first-serve time for the Stanislaus-Cal State San Bernardino match is at 5 p.m.

The seed position was actually decided during the third set in Arcata Saturday night when, in Rohnert Park, Sonoma State easily defeated Chico State, which gave the Warriors' the seventh spot in the final standings. Stanislaus and Chico split the head-to-head series, but the Warriors had a better ratio of sets won to sets lost during CCAA matches.

Against the Lumberjacks (9-15, 7-13 CCAA), the Warriors rallied from behind in sets three and four to take the match after the teams split the first two for the final scores of 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 26-24.

In the fourth, HSU rolled off to a 8-1 score and led 13-7 before the Warriors took charge. Stan State caught up and tied the match at 21 and put away the match with Blair Ehrlich accounting for two of the final four points in the contest.

Lindsay Skadeland posted a career-high 14 kills while Clairissa Larry spiked a Stanislaus-career-best 11 kills to lead the Warriors. Ehrlich finished with 10 kills and 11 digs and Hailey Gruetzmacher dug up 14 attempts. For the night, the Warriors hit .248 on the attacks.
