Richard Medina scored five of the 10 Warrior points to jump-start the extra period as Stanislaus State defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 59-53, in overtime Thursday night.
Medina's three-pointer, 64 seconds into the overtime period, started a 10-1 Stanislaus run that propelled the Warriors to their regular season opener victory. The Warriors will host Dominican on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Arena for their home opener.
The low scoring affair ended at 47-47 in regulation as teams shot lower than 30 percent in the first two halves. The score at haltime was 21-15 on the Stan State side.
Notre Dame de Namur (0-3) played a little better in the second half and erased a six-point Stanislaus lead to force overtime. Jalen Young's layup with six seconds left even the score at 47 to cap a 6-0 Argonauts run.
Kyle Gouveia's offensive rebound and put-back had given the Warriors a 47-41 lead at 1:34.
After nailing that three-pointer to start the OT scoring, Medina capped the Warriors rally with a layup to make it 57-48 to give Stanislaus its biggest lead of the night with 1:35 left to play.
As NDNU tried to stage another late rally, a pair of
Christian Bayne free throws ended the night.
Bayne, who was just 2 of 10 from the floor, finished with 10 points, two assists and five steals.
Kyi Thomas also had 10 points to go with two blocked shots and a steal.
Stephen Evans scored nine points and Medina finished with eight. Gouveia ended up with nine rebounds to lead the Warriors.
NDNU's top score was Tre'Shawn King-Dunbar with 12 points.
