CARSON — In a non-conference-counting game against a CCAA foe, the Stanislaus State men's basketball team came up a little short as Cal State Dominguez Hills held off the Warriors in a 84-77 decision Monday night at the Torodome.
The Toros used an 8-2 run in the final two and a half minutes, which included four free throws in the final 29 seconds, to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Warriors, on the other hand, play well enough to challenge Cal State Dominguez Hills before dropping their third straight game and fell to 1-3 before the CCAA opener at home against Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night.
Christian Bayne had another solid all-around game to lead Stan State as the sophomore guard led the team with 17 points. Bayne also had six rebounds and a career-high nine assists, giving him an assist shy of a double-double. Last season, his best tally was four assists. Bayne, who was 11-for-11 from the foul line on Saturday at Fresno Pacific, extended his free throw streak to 16 straight.
Alek Carlson added another double-digit game with 15 points and
Stephen Evans chipped in 12, including two three-pointers.
Vondel Faniel had seven rebounds to lead the team.
For Cal State Dominguez Hills, three players accounted for 62 of the 84 points (74 percent). Shaquille Hunter had 23, Justin Sadler 20 and Vincent Golson scored 19 to lead the Toros.
Hunter's three-pointer at 8:02 in the second half gave CSUDH its biggest lead at 67-60 in a tight game where teams were mostly within three points of each other throughout. The Warriors cut the deficit down to one, 76-75, on a Evans layup at 2:51 left to play, but that's when CSUDH finished with the 8-2 run to close out the game.
