TURLOCK — It was a great way to celebrate Senior Night as the Stanislaus State Warriors beat No. 17 Cal State San Bernardino in yet another thrilling volleyball match at Fitzpatrick Arena with a 18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12, victory Saturday night.
The upset win was humongous in so many ways.
The Warriors snapped a 29-match losing streak to the national powerhouse program to post their first win over CSUSB since Nov. 3, 2000. To put that into a little bit of perspective, the youngest player on the Stan State team
Heilani Hoeft was three years-old the last time Stanislaus posted a win over San Bernardino. In the all-time head-to-head records, CSUSB had held a 40-2 advantage before Saturday's contest.
It was also the first time Stanislaus beat a nationally ranked team in the last 20 tries. The Warriors last defeated a ranked program on Sept. 25, 2010, against No. 21 UC San Diego — also at home in Turlock.
The victory is another mark on the 2015 squad's list of accomplishments for the program under first-year head coach
Mallori Gibson-Rossi.
The milestone win also helped the Warriors increased their chances of qualifying for the inaugural California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournament as they improved to 14-9 overall and 8-9 in the CCAA. The Warriors moved up to seventh place in the standings, tied with Chico State. The top eight teams at season's end will advance to the CCAA postseason tournament in La Jolla.
Oh, and with 14 wins, the Warriors secured a winning season — the program's first since 2002 and third, ever.
It certainly was a team win statistically Saturay night. Five Warriors had seven or more kills with
Blair Ehrlich leading the way with 14 kills and
Jocelyn Cervantes chipped in 12. No matter which way the Coyotes hit, there was a Warrior to defend as six players were in double digits in digs. Cervantes had 17 digs and
Hailey Gruetzmacher picked up 14 to lead the way.
Maddi Seidl, who split duties with
Kendal Munoz, had 25 assists, 13 digs and four aces.
As for the seniors
Jordan Harris put-way five kills with four block assists, Munoz had 19 assists and 12 digs and
Clairissa Larry pounded away eight kills to chip in.
The Warriors forced a fifth with a fourth set late rally as
Paige Walker hammered away a couple of shots. Stan State rolled to a 6-0 lead in the fifth and then again at 8-2 before the Coyotes rallied. The decisive set eventually played out to 13-12 with two straight CSUSB points. A Stan State timeout later, consecutive kills by Walker and Ehrlich sent the team into a frenzy.
Lauren Nicholson had 22 kills to lead San Bernardino, which snapped a 10-match winning streak. Alexandra Torline, who struggled with hitting errors early, regrouped late in the match and finished with 17 kills. Torline also had 14 digs, six block-assists and five service aces. CSUSB (22-4, 15-3 CCAA) posted 28 total blocks with Kaitlyn Christner helped stuffed eight.
