Battered Warriors come up short in CCAA title match

POMONA — Short-handed and battered, the Stanislaus State men's soccer team couldn't get much of its potent offense going on Sunday during the CCAA championship tournament title match as host Cal Poly Pomona claims a 2-0 win at Kellogg Field.

Michael Torres scored for Cal Poly Pomona (12-2-3) after the Broncos cashed in on an own-goal in the first half to repeat as the conference tournament winners over the Warriors for the second straight time.

Stan State (15-4-2), which was without two starters and a key player off the bench on Sunday, should still qualify for the NCAA Championship tournament having entered the week as the No. 5 ranked team in the West. They defeated Sonoma State on Tuesday and tied Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday. The Warriors will get the official word on Monday at 3 p.m. when the NCAA reveals the brackets on NCAA.com.

"Pomona did everything (they needed), hats off to them and they deserve the title considering how things played out, " head coach Dana Taylor said. "I am extremely proud of the guys because there really is an advantage if you get the bye playing one less game under your legs."

Instead of finishing in the top two in the regular season standings, like Cal Poly Pomona did, the Warriors had to play a first-round match on Tuesday before advancing. That extra contest, the injuries and a player sitting on a red card finally caught up to Stan State.

Plus, the Warriors played in a highly intensive, double overtime shootout game on Friday.

"We were also out two starters and a significant contributor. You just can't play a good team like Cal Poly Pomona that short-handed," added Taylor.

All-CCAA Warriors Jose Ramirez and Jaime Ceja missed the game with injuries suffered in Friday's battle against top-seed Cal State Dominguez Hills. Ramiro Ceja received a red card late in that same contest and had to watch from the stands.

Playing in their third conference championship final match in the last four seasons, the Warriors were out-shot 22-7, mainly due to the fact that they weren't able to push forward with the missing pieces. However, those Warriors did get into the match contributed and left all their hearts on the pitch.

Russ Klabough, who could've easily been named the tournament's most valuable defensive player, was again spectular despite allowing two balls past him. He ended up with a career-best 11 saves against Pomona while drawing cheers and reactions from both sides of supporters.

The first Broncos goal went down as an own goal when a Warrior defender's attempt to head a Kris Korich shot away graced off Klabough to make it 1-0 in the 23rd minute.

Cal Poly Pomona earned its second score on a solid blast by Michael Torres, whose shot flew past a diving Klabough to the right post to make it 2-0 in the 57th minute.

Stanislaus State was playing for its second CCAA championship after claiming a banner in 2012 with a 3-2 win over Chico State in Carson. Last year in Turlock, Stan State played Cal Poly Pomona to a 1-1 tie before the Broncos prevailed with a 3-0 advantage in the PK shootout.

Klabough, Gerardo Cazares and Matthew Waldron were named to the All-Tournament team.
