UC San Diego gifted CCAA tournament title in strange match

POMONA — On another odd-number year, three strange and unfortunate plays went against the Warriors during the CCAA women's soccer championship match as UC San Diego prevented a third Stanislaus State title on Sunday at Kellogg Field.

A mistake, an unlucky call in the box and an own goal resulted in a UC San Diego 3-2 win as the Tritons earned their ninth conference championship. The Warriors were trying to win their third CCAA tournament banner having won, on the two previous odd-number years, in 2011 and 2013.

"Congratulations to UC San Diego they were a fanastic opponent, they played great, they are well coached. We knew it was going to be a great game today and they were worthy of the championship because they did a great job," head coach Gabriel Bolton said.

The Warriors (12-5-3), whiched entered at No. 8 in the NCAA West Region poll, will have to wait for the announcement by the NCAA to see if their season will continue. The tournament selection show is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Monday with the top six ranked teams receiving an invitation to play in the NCAA Championships.

Late in Sunday's title tilt, Stanislaus State made a furious comeback and score twice in the final five minutes on goals by Nicole Larson and Kirsten Coleman for an interesting finish.

UC San Diego went up 1-0 in the 18th minute on a Mary Reilly goal. Reilly picked up a goalkeeper free kick that went right to her for the easy score.

In the 25th minute, Jordyn McNutt converted on a penalty kick goal to make it 2-0. The PK was awarded when Reilly tripped over Lewandowski trying to kick the ball away, but with Nichole Donald right behind Reilly, she was charged with the foul and a red card forcing Stan State to play a-player down for the rest of the match.

UC San Diego took a 3-0 lead eight minutes into the second half on an appearent own goal. A McNutt corner kick hit the far side of the post and bounced off a Warrior for the score.

"We can only control what we can control. Every game has adversities, we just have to continue to play our game and work hard," added Bolton.

Still down a player, the Warriors never let-up and was relentless in the second half. In fact, they out-shot the Tritons 8-5, with most of the shots coming in the final minutes of the game.

Larson collected a rebound shot from a bicyle-shot attempt by Gabriela Vargas and booted in for the goal to avoid the shutout. Just 37 seconds later, two beautiful long passes set up the Coleman score at 86:27 to make it 3-2. A Vargas pass from the back went to Moineau at midfield, then Moineau found a streaking Coleman for a breakaway score.

"I am proud with the heart that was displayed out there and scoring two goals in the final five minutes down a player. I am proud of our efforts and I am proud of our performances today," Bolton said.

"After the first goal it was just what we needed. It just changed our mind-set, no matter how much time there was left, it just came down to us pushing through and working our hardest in the amount time it was given to us," commented Larson on the late offensive surge.

Lewandowski, Larson, Moineau and Maryssa McDuffy were all named to the All-Tournament team. Lewandowski had 10 saves in Friday's semifinal match win over Chico State.
