SEASIDE — Unable to make enough free throws and three-pointers while allowing points off turnovers, the Stanislaus State men's basketball team suffered another big loss at Cal State Monterey Bay in a 86-56 decision.
The Otters led wire-to-wire to defend home court at The Kelp Bed as they improved to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors fell to 3-5 overall and lost their first CCAA game, now 2-1 in league play.
Stan State took 24 free throws, but made just half of them. Then, from long distance that would count for three points, the Warriors were 4 of 16. In all, the Warriors shot 38.5 percent for the night. They were led by
Christian Bayne with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Alek Carlson (0-for-5 from the arch) and
Kyle Gouveia each had eight points.
Monterey Bay also cashed in on the Warriors' mistakes as they turned the ball over 20 times — this a huge difference from Wednesday's game against Chico State where they gave up just seven turnovers. The Otters converted those 20 turnovers into 22 points while dominated the inside, out-scoring Stanislaus, 52-20 in the paint.
The Otters got in front by 10 points just eight minutes into the game, at 17-7, and they maintained the double-digit lead. A 14-2 run late in the first half gave the hosts a 40-18 cushion.
Stanislaus did rally back, cutting the deficit down to 10, 50-40, with a 15-8 run to start the second half. However CSUMB took off again, hitting another 20-plus point margin with 8:13 to play on a pair of Mateo Jones free throws to make it 68-46. And the Warriors could not get closer.
Monterey Bay, which shot 51.4 percent on the night, was 9 of 28 from the three-point line. The Otters were led by Ryan Nitz with 19 points as one of four players in double figures in scoring.
The 30-point loss was similar to last year's game in Monterey in a 80-60 CSUMB win.
The Warriors is at Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
