Strong first half lifts Warriors over San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO — Four players scored in double figures and the Warriors used a strong first half to defeat San Francisco State, 68-52, Saturday night in the city.

Alek Carlson scored 19 points, including five three-pointers, and Christian Bayne had 16 points to lead the Stanislaus as the Warriors improved their record to 3-3 overall and opened the CCAA season with two straight wins. Stephen Evans (12 points) and Kyle Gouveia (10) also scored double digits. Gouveia snagged a career-high 13 rebounds for his first double-double.

Those four players accunted for 57 of the team's points on the night.

San Francisco State (5-2, 0-2 CCAA) got 10 points from Floyd Wormley but shot just 38.8 percent on the night. The Gators were 7 for 22 in the first half while Stan State nailed 45.5 perent of their tries, with five three-pointers, to jump out to a 32-18 halftime lead.

Carlson was 5-for-7 from the three-point line on the night and it was his second triple, at 2:26 left in the first half, that gave the Warriors a 10-2 run that gave them a 27-13 lead.

The Warriors led by as many as 15 points in the second half but the Gators rallied to get within nine. However, Stan State took off again on a 13-3 run, capped by a Richard Medina three-pointer for a 66-47 lead, the Warriors' largest on the night.

Stanislaus also dominated on the boards, out-rebounding SF State, 43-23. Bayne pulled seven rebounds and Carlson had six to go with Gouveia's 13.

Carlson, the lone senior on the team, has scored 15 or more points in four of the six games so far this season. He's made 43.6 percent of his three-point tries, with 17 made.

The Warriors are back home for their next game, a Wednesday night, non-conference game against Chico State at Fitzpatrick Arena. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
