BRISBANE — Niclette Vizcaino had a pretty good day at the plate and around the bases on Tuesday as Cal State Stanislaus, on a last-minute make-up games trip to the Bay Area, split with Academy of Art at Mission Blue Fields in Brisbane.
Jessica Varady pitched a complete game shutout in game one, and with
Morgan Balestreri's 4-for-4 game, the Warriors beat Art U, 6-0. In the second game, the Urban Knights scored runs late to squeak by Stanislaus, 5-3.
Cal State Stanislaus (2-2) scattered 17 hits and was 11-for-11 in stolen bases in the doubleheader for the split. The Warriors will open CCAA play this weekend when they host Cal State East Bay for the four-game set Friday and Saturday.
At the plate, Vizcaino went 4-for-7, walked once and drove in a run in the twinbill. On the base paths, the sophomore was 4-for-4 in stolen bases and also walked once.
Balestreri was the hitting start in game one. Her big hit was a two-run single in the third that made the game 4-0. The Warriors would add two more runs in the fourth, on just one hit, with six stolen bases in the inning. In all, Stanislaus was credited with eight stolen bases in the game.
Those six runs proved to be plenty for starter Varady, who gave up just six hits and struck out four in the complete game. The senior hurler had eight complete games in 2014. Varady was able to pitch herself out of trouble four times, each time with a runner in scoring position. A Urban Knight reached third in the fifth, but was stranded after a sac bunt and a fly out.
Holly Mooring and
Gabby Dias each had three hits on the day as the Warriors batted .283 as a team in the doubleheder. Stanislaus also walked seven times on the day.
In game two, Vizcaino went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, but Art U scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to stay ahead.
Cheyenne Harper was charged with the loss as she gave up two runs on two hits in the fifth inning in of relief of starter
Natalie Rendon.
Nirana Singh had three hits with a double to lead Academy of Art (2-2).
