Huge Warrior rally ends up just short in loss to Holy Names

TURLOCK — Down 7-0, the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team roared all the way back to tie the game, only to falter in the eighth inning of yet another game decided by one run. Holy Names held off the Warriors to win 8-7 to even the series Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors have now played in four consecutive one run games and entered the day on a two-game winnings streak. However, Holy Names went to work early and built a commanding 7-0 lead after three innings.

But the Warriors rallied with two big innings to tie the score before falling to 4-4 overall on the young season. Holy Names, again with strong starting pitching, scratched together the go-ahead run in the eighth — a bloop single that scored Clayton Johannes, the pinch-runner for Nicholas Wagner, who walked to start the inning.

That leadoff walk was the only blemish that ended up hurting Donnie Fairchilds, who pitched tremendously in long-relief, before being tagged with the tough loss. Fairchilds came in in the third to end the ugly third inning and retired 12 of 15 including eight straight before the leadoff walk in the eighth.

It was Fairchilds' solid relief effort that allowed the Warriors to get back into the game. A three-run sixth that was highlighted by a RBI double by Skippy Ferreria and a Erik Colombini sac fly pulled Stanislaus within four runs.

Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Stanislaus finally got into the Holy Names bullpen. Four hits, including a double, in the inning plated four runs to tie the score. Michael Chavarria doubled in Stevie Robinson, who had a pinch-hit single, for the second run. Then Marcus Mastrobuoni doubled to right to score Dante Broome and Chavarria to tie the game.

In the end, Ferreria finished with a 2-for-4, two RBI day to slowly coming out of the early-season slump. The preseason All-American had snapped out of a 1-for-21 skid Friday with a single.

Starter Nick Voumard had a tough time getting into the grove after giving up a two-run shot in the first inning. He allowed CSUEB to bat around in the third — and with a couple of Stanislaus errors in the mix — he was chased after a lot of damage was done. The Pioneers used 10 batters on just four hits, a couple of free passes, three sacrifices and two Warrior errors to score five times for the 7-0 lead.

Zach Verlaan went 3-for-5 and Benjamin Gamba was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including the two-run homer in the first to lead the Hawks. HNU starter Micah Ashburn gave up three runs on four hits in six innings in the no decision. Lefty James Doyle quiet the Stanislaus charge in the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Games three and four of the series are on Sunday in Oakland when the teams meet at Laney College for the Noon first pitch.
