Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

WOW. Warriors win double overtime thriller over UC San Diego

TURLOCK — Wes Bartole finally saved the night for the Warriors to end perhaps the most exciting finish in recent years inside the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. He helped Chris Read to become the night's hero, too.

Bartole blocked a would-be-buzzer-beater layup by UC San Diego's Hunter Walker as time expired in the second overtime period as Cal State Stanislaus won the epic thriller, 67-66, to end a dramatic night. Just 5.3 seconds earlier on the other end of the court, Read nailed a 18-foot jumper to get the lead back for the Warriors.

Read, who had struggled offensively most of the night hitting just 3 of 14 shots in regulation and the first overtime period, came up huge in the final extra time. The team's leading scorer made all four of his shots in the second OT — including the clutch jumper after coming around a double-screen — to help the Warriors break the tie for third place in the CCAA standings.

Cal State Stanislaus, now standing alone in third behind Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona, improved to 14-7 overall and 11-5 in conference play. Chico State beat Cal Poly Pomona, 60-52, to take sole control of first place.

Read finished with 15 points to lead the Warriors. Shey Mataele scored 13 and Christian Bayne netted 12 off the bench. Bartole led all players with 12 rebounds with one assist and the biggest block of his season.

Saturday night's epic battle for third place came down to the wire — three times.

First, it was the end of regulation. Trailing by one, Rob Walters made one of two free throws to tie the game. UCSD had a chance to go back ahead on a Walker jumper, but the long rebound went to Clinton Tremelling. After a Stanislaus timeout, the ball Read put up for a three-point attempt for the win got stuck between the rim and the glass to send the game into overtime.

In the first extra period, trailing by three points, Bartole made one of two free throws to get within two. After Walters missed two free throws, Bartole stole a Tritons inside pass and returned with a layup on a great in-the-paint pass from Mataele to tie the game at 1:08 left. After another Walker miss, and another Tremelling rebound, Tremelling made what everyone thought was the winning three-pointer.

Coming out of a timeout, Tremelling drained his third and final triple of the night with an off-balanced shot. The ball bounced around on the rim three times before going through the net for a 57-54 Stanisalus lead with 6.3 seconds left. However, George Buaku hit a 22-foot trey at the buzzer to tie the game again.

Then, Read finally took over. He made all four of his shots in the second OT to put the Warriors in the drivers seat, including a jumper at 1:31 for a four-point Warrior  lead. But a Zach McMillan dunk and a Adam Klie three-pointer swung the lead back to UCSD with 21 seconds left to play — until the dramatic finishes.

UC San Diego (12-8, 10-6 CCAA) was led by Klie with 17 points. The Tritons made 10 three-pointers on the night that kept them in the game.
