TURLOCK — For the first time this season, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team scored more than 80 points as the Warriors show they can still put up points in an impressive showing Saturday night in the regular season finale.
After the program recongized its seven seniors playing in their final home game, the Warriors jumped out ahead and held off a sharp-shooting Cal State Monterey Bay team to win 84-78.
The victory means the Warriors secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CCAA Men's Basketball Championship tournament. They will begin to defend their tournament crown on Thursday at the Stockton Arena. The match-up will be against No. 5 UC San Diego with a tip-off time of 5:35 p.m. The winner of the first round game will face top-seed Chico State on Friday.
More importantly the Warriors take a three-game winning streak with their offense clicking into the conference tournament. Saturday night, the Warriors shot 52.6 percent on the night with leader
Chris Read hitting nine of 17 shots for 22 points.
The Warriors enjoyed their best scoring weekend after netting 77 points Friday night to beat Cal State East Bay — and that was the first time the team scored more than 70 points since Jan. 24, a span of nine games.
The usual cast of Warriors provided the offense, and defense, on Saturday night.
Rob Walters picked up yet another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Wes Bartole scored 11 points and pulled eight boards and
Shey Mataele chipped in 13 points.
With two of the top rebounders in the league in Walters and Bartole, Stanislaus out-rebounded the Otters, 36-18.
Still, Cal State Monterey Bay (13-15, 9-13 CCAA) was never really out of the game, thanks to their hot shooting from beyond the arch.
After the Warriors take a 41-29 lead with less than two points to play in the first half, CSUMB used a 10-2 run between the end of the half and the start of the second to make it a four-point, 43-39 game. The Otters got even closer when Patrick Lefiti's three-pointer made it 60-59 at 10:52 to play.
But
Alek Carlson's responding trey seemed to have restarted the Stanislaus side. Carlson started a 13-5 run that gave the Warriors another 9-point lead. Evan Zeller's three-pointer at 3:22 left was the Otters' last long-range bucket as the Warriors held on to win.
In the end, Cal State Monterey Bay was 13 of 24 from the three-point line to stay close with Stanislaus.
The Warriors will make their fourth CCAA tournament appearance and their second straight. They beat their first round opponent UC San Diego twice this season, including an epic double-overtime thriller on Feb. 7.
