Game Recap: Baseball |

Close opening game turns tide against Warriors in twinbill

ROHNERT PARK — The Warriors were one hit away from tying the opener, and perhaps went on to snap a skid, on Friday. Instead, a narrow loss was followed by a Seawolf no-hitter as Sonoma State took both games of the conference doubleheader, 7-5 and 7-0, in Rohnert Park.

Cal State Stanislaus continues its struggles, in this season, and in Rohnert Park as the Warriors dropped to 6-17 overall and 1-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Instead of ending a six-game losing streak in the first game, the Warriors have now lost eight straight.

Stanislaus' chance to end the skid will come on Saturday, at home in Turlock, with a pair of 9-inning games starting at 2 p.m.

The Warriors have now lost seven straight at Sonoma State. They are also just 1-21 in the last 22 CCAA games in Rohnert Park.

In Friday's opener, the Warriors squandered a 5-2 lead when Sonoma State scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Still, the Warriors had a chance to win in the ninth after relievers Donnie Fairchilds, Blake Wilson and Aaron Godinez quiet the Seawolves.

In the Stanislaus ninth, the Warriors got the first two batters on base on a James Heller single and a Nick Molina walk. Patrick Mulry moved the runners to scoring position with a bunt to set up a great scoring chance with just one out. However, Tyler Sanders got pinch-hitter Klayton Miller to strikeout and Scott Stetson to pop-up to second to end the game.

Marcus Mastrobuoni highlighted the Warriors' third with a bases clearing three-run triple to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead at the time. Mastrobuoni ended up with four RBIs in the game when he plated Stetson on a bunt in the fifth.

Heller and Nick Ippolito each had two hits in the opener and Stetson went 1-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Tyler Murphy was tagged with the loss in the game in the four-inning outing.

The fact that Sonoma State escaped game one with the win seemed to have turned the momentum towards the Seawolves. SSU's Ryan Luna turned in the program's first no-hitter since April 30, 2005, in the nightcap. Luna struckout nine Warriors and walked two in the 7-inning complete game no-hitter.

Chris Senn started game two on the mound for the Warriors and suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Nick Voumard and Chris Sauls are expected to take the mound as starters on Saturday with Voumard throwing the first game at 2 p.m.
