Heller's huge offensive day leads to Warrior sweep over Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO — On Saturday, the Warriors displayed the winning formula that head coach Kenny Leonesio has been looking for — lots of offense and steady pitching from his young starters.

James Heller went off against the Coyotes and young guns Nick Voumard and Tyler Murphy both had stellar outings as the Warriors swept a pair at Cal State San Bernardino. Heller had three doubles and drove in four runs in game one and Voumard threw seven strong innings in the 14-4 win. Then, in the nightcap, with Murphy tossing another seven-inning complete game, Heller homered twice in the Warriors' 10-1 win.

The Warriors (13-19, 8-14 CCAA) have secured their second straight series win and will go for the four-game sweep on Saturday in the finale at Fiscalini Field. Cal State Stanislaus has won six of its last seven games and are 7-2 in the last nine games.

For the day, Heller went 5-for-7 with three doubles, two home runs, drove in nine runs and scored five times. In Thursday's opener, he was 2-for-4 with a double.

It was Heller who got the offense started in game one on Saturday with his RBI double in the second inning that scored Michael Chavarria. He would again double to left-center in the third to plate two more runs before scoring on a Patrick Mulry homer to right to make it 9-0. Heller again got the rally going in the Warriors' five-run seventh with another RBI double as the Warriors cruised to the win.

Scott Stetson went 4-for-6 with four singles and two runs batted in in game one. Mulry ended up 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Nick Ippolito and Nick Molina each also had two hits in the 16-hit showcase.

Aside from a four-run fourth inning that included two unearned runs, Voumard was solid in the start to improve to 5-1. He gave up four runs on nine hits in seven innings and struckout seven while walking just one.

In the nightcap, After Molina gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead on a single, Heller belted a three-run homer to left to make it 4-0 in the first inning. Heller would go yard again in the third with a solo shot. Before a flyout in the fifth, Heller was actually 5-for-his first six at-bats on the day.

Chavarria went 2-for-4 in game two as part of the Warriors' 10-hit display. For the day, Stanislaus batted .356 with 24 runs on 26 hits.

Murphy gave up a RBI double in the first inning but settled down and dominated. The Coyotes reached second base only once after the first inning and never threatened. At one point, Murphy retired 15 of 16 batters before back-to-back singles in the seventh.

Cal State San Bernardino fell to 6-25 overall and 4-18 in CCAA play.
