CARSON — Seven road victories in a season. Check. Chalk that accomplishment up as another Stanislaus State record as the Warriors defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 25-17, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17, Saturday night.
Taylor Massengale and
Jocelyn Cervantes each had 15 kills as they led the Warriors to a road trip split in Southern California. The Warriors improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Satuday's victory away from Turlock marks the seventh road win for the Warriors which is another Stanislaus State team record — and we are only nine matches in.
The last time a Stanislaus team won six road matches was 2010, a feat that took the entire season to accomplish. Not even the 19-win 2002 team won more than six matches away from home. The Warriors will look to extend their road-trip success on Tuesday with a quick trip to Haywards to face Cal State East Bay.
Saturday night at the Torodome in Carson, the Warriors jumped out ahead early and was in control in the first set until the Toros took a 13-12 lead. But a 9-1 run, including five straight, turned the tide and momentum back around as Stan State held off CSUDH for the first set win.
Lindsay Skadeland and Cervantes each had two kills to key that run.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-9, 0-3) rallied from down 14-7 to make a game of it in set two but Massengale dominated late with four consecutive kills to account for Warrior points to help get Stanislaus to a 2-0 lead.
The Toros won set three by scoring 10 of the set's final 11 points, including five straight points in the end, to force a fourth set. In the fourth, Stanislaus finally pulled ahead from a thrilling see-saw battle with seven unanswered points from 18-17 for the victory.
Massengale also had four total blocks to go with her 15 kills. She posted a .265 average with six errors on 34 attempts. Cervantes had a nice hitting night, going 15 for 43 with three errors (.279).
Blair Ehrlich added 10 kills and seven digs to the cause.
Sarah Crowl had 22 digs,
Maddi Seidl 21 and
Paige Walker had 17 as the Warriors recorded 94 digs as a team.
Seidl surpassed 40 digs for the fourth time this season with 43.
There are eight more road matches for the Warriors this season, including Tuesday's match at Cal State East Bay.
