TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State men's soccer team held off a second half Academy of Art attack as the Warriors opened the 2015 season with a 3-2 victory at Warrior Stadium.
Manny Villegas,
Danny Valenzuela and
Ryan Chaney each scored goals for Stanislaus to lead the Warriors to their first win in three meetings over the Urban Knights. This was the teams' first meeting here in Turlock with the home team prevailing.
Academy of Art made a comeback in the second half, thanks two penalty kick scores to give the Warriors a scare. Kristof Urbanyi converted on both PK chances in the 50th and 69th minutes.
The Warriors came out of the gate on fire with a fast pace offense. Those early chances paid off in the 22nd minute when Villegas gave the team a 1-0 lead after picking up a soft touch from
Daniel Kuczynski who had collected a loose ball in front of the net.
Stanislaus State's second goal came just before intermission from a long punt from Warrior keeper
Russ Klabough. His boot took one bounce into the box and Valenzuela headed it in over Art U goalie Kevin Mendez for a 2-0 lead.
The final tally by the Warriors came in the 52nd minute with freshman
Ryan Chaney scoring his first collegiate goal. The play was another long pass by Stanislaus with
Luis Hernandez serving from the back to a streaking Chaney, who slipped it under Mendez for the decisive goal.
In the end, Stan State out-shot Art U, 15-9 with a 8-2 corner kick advantage.
After a quick trip to Belmont to take on Notre Dame de Namur Saturday at 2 p.m., the Warriors will be back in action at Warrior Stadium on Tuesday when they host Simpson at 7 p.m.
