BELMONT — The Stanislaus State volleyball team is 2-0 — that accomplishment made first-year head coach
Mallori Gibson-Rossi's collegiate debut a special one as the Warriors won both matches today at the Route 92 Showdown at Notre Dame de Namur.
The Warriors handed Gibson-Rossi her first career victory in the early afternoon match on Friday with a 3-1 win over co-host Notre Dame de Namur. Stan State then wrapped up the day in Belmont with a straight-set pounding of Academy of Art before shifting across Route 92 and the San Mateo Bridge to Hayward for Saturday's matches at co-host Cal State East Bay.
The two wins already matched last year's win totals and the 2-0 start is the program's first since 2011.
In the NDNU win, four Warriors smashed double-digits number of kills as Stanislaus State played as a powerful team in its season-opening victory in a
17-25, 25-16, 29-27, 25-11 win over Notre Dame de Namur.
"I am very proud of the way we fought throughout the entire match," Gibson-Rossi said.
Taylor Massengale led Stanislaus State with 15 kills with a prolific .636 attacking percentage. She had 22 swings and made just one attacking error while putting up four total blocks in the first regular season match.
Paige Walker chipped 13 kills and 16 digs while
Jocelyn Cervantes and
Blair Ehrlich each added 10 kills.
"Offensively, we played well all four sets but the difference was that our defense stepped up," added Gibson-Rossi. "In practice this week we emphasized the importance of relentless defense and it really paid off."
As a team the Warriors hit an impressive .247 on the attack and tallied 17 total blocks (nine team blocks) and 85 digs.
Sarah Crowl led with 22 digs and setter
Maddi Seidl had 18 digs to go with 40 assists in her Warrior debut.
After dropping the first set 25-17, perhaps due to nerves, the Warriors went to work. They rolled off five straight points to start the second to begin the comeback. A tight contest late in the third eventualy went Stan State's way as the Warriors scored four of the final five points, capped by a Cervantes kill to win the 29-27 decision.
It was all Warriors in the fourth as they easily put away the Argonauts (0-1) with big leads at 8-1, 16-6, and the final count of 25-11.
In the late afternoon contest against Academy of Art, Cervantes led the way with 15 kills as the Warriors again was efficient on offense. They put-away 30.3 percent of their attacks (AAU was .140) to roll over the Urban Knights, a 13-15 middle-of-the-PacWest pack team in 2014.
Massengale added 11 more kills to her day to finish with 26 kills on opening day while Walker chipped in eight more spikes.
The Warriors did not allow Art U to reach 20 points at all, putting away the Urban Knights, 25-14, 25-18, 25-18.
In Hayward, the Warriors will play Dominican (1-1) at 2 p.m. and Holy Names (0-2) at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
