OCEANSIDE — The last time a Warriors women's basketball team won seven straight games, that team advanced to the NCAA tournament. That was the 2002-03 season. This year's team matched that seven-game winning streak with a 63-50 win over Cal State San Marcos Saturday night.
Ana Burch led the Warriors with 16 points and
Alysa Valentine scored 13 points to lead Stanislaus. Stanislaus State improved to 13-4 overall and 9-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors remain in a tie with Cal State East Bay for third place after the Pioneers won both of their games this weekend.
Burch had four rebounds and three steals and Valentine pulled five boards with three steals for a nice all-around game. Valentine also made three three-pointers.
Riley Holladay led the team with seven rebounds.
Stan State's win over the Cougars completes the series sweep over the first-year CCAA team. It was the Warriors' first win in Oceanside as the game was played at Mira Costa College during the construction of the CSUSM's new on campus arena.The 2002-03 season rolled off seven straight wins — and went 9-2 in the final 11 games — to go 18-9 and advanced to the NCAA West Region tournament. Only one other squad the 1999-2000 team, had a seven-game winning streak during the CCAA era.
The Warriors closed out the first half of Saturday's game with a 12-2 run for a 35-29 lead. They then ran off a 13-2 run to start the second half to build a 48-31 lead after back-to-back three-pointers by Valentine and
Jasmine Washington.
Stanislaus State also used its defense to create scoring chances, forcing 23 San Marcos turnovers adn scored 27 points off CSUSM miscues. The Warriors also out-scored the Cougars 30-14 inside the paint.
Ashley Ontiveros and Paige Barber each had nine points to lead Cal State San Marcos (5-10, 3-7 CCAA). Barber was hot early in the game nailing three three-pointers.
