TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State baseball team sprayed more hits with another starting pitcher throwing up blanks as the Warriors defeated William Jessup, 7-0, Saturday afternoon to complete the three-game series sweep.Michael Chavarria went 3-for-4 on the day as the Warriors scattered 14 more hits as Stanislaus State improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2011. Chavarria had lots of success at the plate in two days as the preseason All-Region second team pick went 7-for-11 with three runs batted in and three stolen bases to lead the Warriors offensive charge.
For the series, the Warriors hit .355 and tallied 39 hits and outscored Williams Jessup (0-6), 23-2. Stanislaus also showcased its running game with 13 total bases — 10 of them came on Saturday.
Nick Ippolito, too, had seven hits in the series after going 2-for-5 on Saturday in the leadoff spot.
Patrick Mulry,
Nick Molina and
Aldo Koutsoyanopulos each also had two hits.
Chavarria got the scoring started in the first inning with a two-out RBI triple to plate Ippolito. Molina followed with a run-scoring single to make it 2-0 early.
That was plenty for
Jordan Kron, who made his anticipated Warrior debut. Kron show he's got good stuff early with a pretty easy time in the first three innings, allowing just two hits. He got into a little bit of trouble in the fourth with two free passes and a single as WJU loaded the bases with one out. Kron, thought, got out of the jam with a flyout and a groundout to end the inning.
Like
Tyler Murphy and
Nick Voumard before him on Friday, Kron also gave head coach
Kenny Leonesio a quality start with five shutout innings. He struck out three and gave up five hits.
Robbie DeVries, who threw three innings in middle relief, also was solid, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts. DeVries, too, had to get out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, but a strikeout and a grounder ended that WJU threat.
William Jessup, which had nine hits on Saturday, left a total of 14 runners on base, including the bags full of runners three times — twice with less than two outs.
Stanislaus will fine-tune some areas this week before heading down to Fresno to take on Fresno Pacific for a doubleheader on Friday. That twinbill is at 4 p.m. before the series switches to Turlock for a pair on Saturday. The Sunbirds opened with a 5-2 loss at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
