ARCATA — To be one of the top squads in the CCAA, teams must win the tough away games. The Stanislaus State women's basketball team successfully accomplished that this weekend during the longest road trip in the conference after defeating Humboldt State, 68-59, Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena.
The victory marks the first time the Warriors win a CCAA game in Arcata as Stan State improve to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stan State was 0-9 in Arcata since Humboldt State joined the conference in 2006.
Stanislaus also snapped an eight-game losing streak to Humboldt State. The Warriors completed the weekend sweep that included their first win at Cal Poly Pomona since 2003 on Thursday.
Erika Larsen led all players with 16 points with eight rebounds,
Reana Hardin scored 15 points and
Riley Holladay added 13 to lead the Warriors to their fourth straight win and second consecutive conference weekend sweep.
Perhaps it was the eight hours of sleep in their own beds early Friday morning, but the Warriors didn't seem to let the long trip — 1,500 total miles of bus rides — bother them. After allowing HSU to take a 7-0 lead, the Warriors rallied on an 11-2 run to take a lead and had control of the game.
Humboldt State (7-8, 4-4 CCAA) only made things a little insteresting with a few three-pointers down the stretch while the Warriors missed some free throws to cut the Lumberjacks deficit down to seven. Stanislaus led by as many as 14 to start the second half.
The Warriors held HSU to just 32.8 pecent shooting on the night (and 5 of 22 on three-point tries) despite making just 14 of 26 free throws. The missed opportunities on the line almost allowed the Lumberjacks to comeback after a pair of treys by Kiana Brown in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Amanda Kunst led the Jacks with 15 points (9 of 10 from the line).
Still, the Warriors' defense was able to limit HSU's scoring to hang on for the win.
Both Larsen and Holladay have now scored in double digits in all games played in 2016. Hardin has netted 11 or more points in three straight.
Head coach
Wayman Strickland elected to bring the team home after Thursday night's game at Pomona so they could rest in their own beds for the night. The team returned to Turlock at about 1:30 a.m. Friday and met at Fitzpatrick Arena for some free throw drills before boarding the bus for Arcata at about 11 a.m.
Stanislaus will be home for the next two games as the Warriors host Sonoma State and San Francisco State. The Warriors are 5-0 at Fitzpatrick Arena this season.
