TURLOCK — For once this season, the Stanislaus State men's soccer team earned an one-goal, overtime victory as they edged Bethesda, 4-3, in double overtime Monday night.
In what was supposed to be a tune-up non-conference match against the NAIA private university from Anaheim, the Warriors had to battle hard and come-from-behind to pull out the much-needed win. Stanislaus, now 2-9-3 overall, hoped to use this challenge to prepare for the upcoming CCAA weekend — the Warriors' final two home matches this season.
The Bethesda Flames (3-8-0) only dressed 11 players for the contest but was up to the task against the Warriors. The Flames were sound technically with speed and sharp passing. It was that combination of skills that tied the game in the 35th minute. The Flames then went-up 2-1 in the 67th minute, forcing Stan State to press and pepper shots to play catch-up.
Stan State did manage to rally back to even the score at 2-2 on a nice score by
Ryan Chaney at 75:55. Chaney took a point-blank shot in front of the net after touches by
Ahmed Mohammed and
Manny Villegas. It was Mohammed who had given the Warriors an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
Villegas then blasted a shot through the legs of defenders upon stealing back a clearing try to make it 3-2 in the 86th minute.
However, Bethesda was awarded a game-tying penalty kick chance in the 88th minute, sending the contest into overtime.
The physical contest continued in extra time and eventually
Matthew Waldron ended the contest in the 104th minute with another penalty kick try. By this point, Bethesda was down to 10 players after Konstantin Khan picked up his second yellow card two minutes before the end of the night.
In all, there were 29 total fouls and 11 yellow cards.
The Warriors out-shot Bethesda 32-15 with 11 on goal. Bethesda's goalkeeper Oscar Gomez played a solid match at the net with seven saves.
