Warriors advance to CCAA semifinal match with win at Pomona

POMONA — For the third straight postseason, the Stanislaus State women's soccer team won its opening match on the road as the Warriors defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, Tuesday night to advance in the CCAA Soccer Tournament.

Gabriela "Montse" Vargas scored in the 70th minute to lift the Warriors as they move on in the postseason tournament. This time, they get to come home.

Stanislaus State (13-6 overall) will take on regular season winner and top-seed UC San Diego Friday night at 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium in a semifinal contest. The other semifinal contest will feature No. 2 seed Sonoma State against No. 6 Cal State L.A. Cal State L.A. beat Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, Tuesday.

Last year, the Warriors remained in SoCal after winning a first round match at Cal State L.A. as Cal Poly Pomona was the host of the CCAA Tournament. Stanislaus State is hosting the CCAA Soccer Tournament for the sixth time in eight years since the stadium opened in 2009. In 2014, the Warriors won their first (of three) away contests, in Bellingham, Wash., in the NCAA Tournament.

The Warriors have now won four straight matches with three consecutive shutouts. Vargas also scored the lone goal in Saturday's 1-0 win at San Francisco State to help Stan State earn the CCAA tournament berth.

"We played with great energy and toughness tonight. Cal Poly is a tough physical team," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "We had to weather the pressure a bit in the first half but as the game went on we got into a great rhythem. In the second half we ewre outstanding in all phases of the game."

After holding off Cal Poly Pomona's steady attack in the first half, the Warriors were on the offensive in the second half. Vargas finally broke through to put the Warriors on the board in the 70th minute with a shot though defenders to the near post to make it 1-0. Selia Torres and Kirsten Coleman were credited on the assist with a couple of touches on the far side near the team bench.

"The goal (Montse) scored was absolutely world class. To have that type of composure and creativity in front of goal is fantastic," Bolton added.

The Broncos (7-7-3) had out-shot Stan State 7-2 in the first half and 11-8 for the game, but the Warriors cashed in on the opportunity. Meanwhile, Stanislaus goalkeeper Haley Crook picked up six saves to keep the Broncos off the board.

"Our team defense was outstanding. We made some adjustments at halftime which the team executed perfectly," said Bolton.

Stanislaus State entered this postseason as the only CCAA team to have an active streak of qualifying for seven straight postseason tournaments. The last time the Warriors played on home pitch during the CCAA Tournament was in 2013 when they capture their second championship.
