SAN FRANCISCO — Playing with more intensity than Friday, and handling the balls with improvement, the Stanislaus State men's basketball team put up the points, but still lost another nail-biter. This time the Warriors fell in the shooting hands of Academy of Art in a 88-85 overtime game at the SF State Tip-Off Classic.
All five starters were in double digits, and two of them had career highs, but it wasn't enough as Stan State opens the season 0-2. Friday afternoon, the Warriors lost by two points, 60-58, to Dominican in a game decided in the final seconds.
Kaelen Mitchell led the team again with a new-high of 21 points while
Richard Medina nailed a career-high six three-pointers for 18 points
Stephen Evans and
Vondel Faniel both scored 14 and
Kyle Gouveia added 13 points to his game-high 11 rebounds. Evans also dished 10 assists, also a career-high.
But, the rest of the team scored just five points. The only other Warrior to play significant among of minutes was
Keiland Callum (30 minutes). He scored three points.
Joseph Alvarez had the other bucket.
Academy of Art (1-1) got 47 points from its bench scoring. They were led by Dante Williams (17 points) and Kendall Brown (16), both non-starters.
After cleaning up the ball-handing part of the game, the Warriors rallied from down 11 points to pull within two halfway through the first half. While Art U remained ahead, the Warriors did manage to tie the game at the half at 38 apiece.
The second half was as tight as it can be with no one leading by more than four points (that happened just once). Stan State had an one-point lead on a Gouveia layout at 1:04, but a Luke Radovic free throw tied the game with 35 seconds left for overtime.
Art U didn't miss much in the extra period, hitting 4 of 5 shots and both three-point attempts to take advantage. The Urban Knights also made all four free throw tries. A Chris Salas three-pointer at 2:31 remaining gave the Knights a six-point lead that they held on to.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Mitchell — who scored 38 points in two games — was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Warriors will take a few days off from competition to try and regroup before hosting CCAA foe Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference tilt next Saturday at 4 p.m.
