Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stan State could not overcome poor shooting night in loss to NDNU

TURLOCK — For a little while, it appeared that the Stanislaus State women's basketball team could survive a bad shooting night and some-how get a win on home court against Notre Dame de Namur.

Well, it was not the case as the visiting Argonauts turned it's hot-shooting offense back on in the fourth quarter to notch their first win of the season in a 64-48 decision over the Warriors Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Notre Dame de Namur shot 52 percent in the second half — after running off to a 13-2 start — to improve its record to 1-3 and beat a CCAA team for the first time in four tries this preseason. The Warriors had a four-game winning streak, and a 7-1 series advantage, over NDNU before the night started.

Stan State shot just 28.2 percent for the night and missed its first 17 three-point attempts until Angelica Baylon made the team's first triple at 4:51 to go.

By then, NDNU had used a 10-4 run to start the fourth period for an 11-point lead. After Baylon's trey, the Argonaut took off again on an 11-0 run to put themselves up by 19 points for the surprising run-away victory.

The Argonauts led by 12, 33-21, on a Emily Tevez three-pointer to start the second half, but the Warriors responded with a 13-4 spurt to make it a three-point game, capped by a Caprina Pipion three-point play. That was the closest Stan State got, however, as NDNU out-scored the Warriors 22-11 in the final period.

Jerusha Paine and Tevez each finished with 21 points to lead NDNU. Paine also had a game-high 13 rebounds. Tevez was 8-for-10 from the field and 3 of 4 from the arch.

The Warriors got a pair of 8's from Cassidy Sanders-Curry and Riley Holladay. Lailoni Gaines provided some positive spark off the bench with seven points, six rebounds, three steals and four blocked-shots.

The Warriors will pack up their cold-weather gear and head to Fairbanks, Alaska for the Northstar Invitational at the University of Alaska over the Thanksgiving weekend. They will play three games, starting on Thanksgiving Day, against Metro State. Stan State will also play host Alaska and Newman.
