BELMONT — After being held to just two made baskets in each of the two previous games,
Kaelen Mitchell — the Warriors' leading scorer entering the week's play — returned to form and scored 20 points in leading Stanislaus State to a 68-57 win over Holy Names Saturday evening at the NDNU Thanksgiving Classic.
Mitchell made seven buckets this time around, including three three-pointers, as the Warriors shot much-better from long distance against the Hawks to improve to 2-4 on the season. Stan State went 1-2 during a busy Thanksgiving week on the road. They fell at Chico State on Tuesday and lost to tournament host Notre Dame de Namur Friday night.
In those two contests, Mitchell was 2 for 7 each night with 5 and 4 points, respectively (he made one three-pointer at Chico State). Before this week, Mitchell was leading the Warriors with 17.3 points a clip through the first three games.
Saturday night against Holy Names (0-5), Mitchell scored 20 on 7 of 12 shooting and 3-for-4 from the 3-point circle.
Even though the Warriors got off to another slow start, they did recover. A
Stephen Evans three-pointer ended the first half with a 30-28 Stan State lead.
After Holy Names' Zachary Young tied the game with a layup to start the second half, the Warriors went on a run that set the stage for the rest of the game.
The Warriors surged ahead with a 13-point run in the first five minutes of the half to make it 43-30. They would extend that margin as large as 16 when
Jaelen Ragsdale hit a free throw with 9:38 to play.
Vondel Faniel notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and
Kyle Gouveia was indouble digits in scoring for the sixth time this season with 10 points.
Stanislaus shot 5 of 8 from the three-point line after going 0-for-17 Friday night. The Warriors ended up 49.1 percent from the field — helped by a hot second half when they shot 59.1 percent.
Jason Webster had 19 points and Young finished with 14 to lead Holy Names.
The Warriors will begin CCAA play this week with a single game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday. Stan State beat CSUDH last Saturday in a non-conference contest, 64-45, in Turlock.
