Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Humboldt State downs Warriors with barrage of 3 pointers

TURLOCK — The Humboldt State Lumberjacks took a little bit to warm up and when they did, they got hot in the second half as the visitors defeated the Stanislaus State Warriors, 78-58, in men's basketball Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Lumberjacks made 16 three-pointers — nine of them in the second half — to pull away to gain their first road win to improve to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Unable to answer the hot streak of Humboldt, the Warriors split the weekend and fell to 1-2 in CCAA play (3-6 overall).

Kaelen Mitchell supplied much of the offense with 15 points and Vondel Faniel scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half to lead Stan State. Kyle Gouveia had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Five HSU players where in double figures in scoring, led by Nikhil Lizotte's 17. He made five three pointers. Malik Morgan added 14 points with seven assists.

Stanislaus led by as many as nine points in the first half after a 13-3 run behind eight points from Mitchell. But HSU trimmed the Warrior lead to one before Stan State held a 34-31 advantage at the break.

Then, Humboldt State got hot.

The Lumberjacks opened the second half draining triples — hitting on six of their first six three-point attempts during a 25-7 run that started off with 13 unanswered points. HSU would lead by 21 points after more three-pointers to make it 64-43 at 9:53 left to play.

In the end, HSU shot 43.2 percent from behind the arch, including a hot 9 of 17 in the second half. Overall, they were 48.3 percent (28-for-58) on the night.

The Warriors, unlike Friday night, struggled from long range hitting on just 6 of 20 three-point tries en route to a 40 percent shooting night (24 for 60).

Stanislaus State will have a week off from competition during finals week before hosting Fresno Pacific on Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. prior to the Christmas break.
