Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late run by the 'Yotes put Warrior women away

SAN BERNARDINO — In a match-up between two of the teams in the middle of the race for a berth for the CCAA tournament, the Cal State San Bernardino held home court and pull away late to beat the Stanislaus State Warriors, 77-61, at Coussoulis Arena.

Stan State, which had an seven-game winning streak, all of the sudden has gone 1-3 in the last four games as the Warriors fell to 14-7 overall and 10-5 in conference play. The Warriors hold a two-and-a-half game lead over fifth place Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino both with a 8-8 league record.

Alexica Mack had 23 and Chelsea Austin scored 21 to lead San Bernardino, which improved to 11-10 overall.

The Warriors again had a bad night shooting while the other team shot lights-out. Stanislaus made 32.3 percent of its shots while San Bernardino nailed nearly 54 percent of its attempts, inlcuding a 17-for-27 (63 percent) second half.

Reana Hardin did her part with a career-high 20 points plus seven rebounds and Cassidy Sanders-Curry scored 14 points with two blocks and two steals. Hardin, who also had two steals, made 5 of 8 three-point tries to lead the team.

It was a tight game for most of the night until a 8-0 CSUSB run that gave the Coyotes a 34-29 lead just before halftime. Stanislaus opened the second half with a 8-2 run to take a short 38-36 lead. The Warriors led by as many as four points, after a 12-0 spurt late in the third quarter, but that lead was short lived, too.

San Bernardino responded with 10 unanswered points to regain control and used a 15-0 run starting in the middle of the fourth to pull away. CSUSB made 7 of 8 shots during that stretch of the game while the Warriors turned the ball over six times and missed all three field goal attempts.

It won't get much easier on Saturday when the Warriors visit RIMAC Arena against UC San Diego in La Jolla. The Tritons defeated Chico State, 68-47, Friday to improve to 19-3 overall and 14-2 in CCAA play. UCSD is also 8-1 at home.
