Stanislaus out lasts, out-guns Humboldt State in triple overtime

TURLOCK — It took three overtimes, but the Warriors did it. Stanislaus State out-lasted Humboldt State in an absolute thriller inside Fitzpatrick Arena on Friday, pulling off an amazing 108-100 win to finally end the 11-game losing streak.

In the most exciting game of the season in front of Warrior fans, Stan State finally pull ahead behind five players in double figures to improve to 6-16 overall and 5-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The win allowed the Warriors avoided the ugly feat of matching the worst losing streak during the CCAA era.

Christian Bayne scored a career high 27 points — 13 of them from the free throw line — and Vondel Faniel netted 21 points, also a personal best to lead the Warriors. But it was the play of Joey Bennett and Stephen Evans made the big differences, especially when the game was on the line.

Bennett, who also scored a career high with 19 points, nearly won the game on a buzzer beater layup in regulation. But that layup attempt came up a little short to force overtime. In the second overtime, Bennett hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to make it 90-90 to force the third additional period. The redshirt junior ended up 7 of 13 from the floor and made 4 of 7 three-point tries for his career night. He also pulled eight rebounds.

In the third OT, Tim Thymes started a 8-0 run with a layup. Then back to back three-pointers by Bayne and Evans gave the Warriors a 98-90 lead as Stan State held on for the victory.

Evans put up his career high 17 points with nine in the final overtime period after being held to just three second half points.

Kyle Gouveia was the fifth Warrior to score double figures with 13 points, earning his mark on the foul line, hitting 9 of 11. In all, the Warriors took 40 free throws and made 28.

Malik Morgan led the Lumberjacks (17-7, 11-7 CCAA) with 22 points. Thomas Witzel and Nikhil Lizotte each had 18 points.

Friday night's game was the Warriors' longest since losing to UC San Diego, on Feb. 2, 2007, in four overtime periods.
