HAYWARD — With more great relief pitching, the Warriors took the twinbill opener, 8-7, before Cal State East Bay split the doubleheader by winning the nightcap, 7-3, in seven innings.
Micah Hall earned a two-inning save, his second in as many outings, to hold off a surging Cal State East Bay team for the Warriors to win the first game. After the split, the Warriors are now 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Andrew Mallon and
Aldo Koutsoyanopulos both homered to lead the Warriors in game one. Mallon went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs and Koutsoyanopulos was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Patrick Mulry also had two hits including a triple.
After the Pioneers chased Warrior starter
Nick Voumard after 6 2/3 innings, the bullpen took over and limited the CSUEB offense. Voumard still picked up the win to improve to 3-0 after giving up six runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts.
Chris Senn got the Warriors out of a jam in the seventh as the Pioneers had runners at first and third with a run already in, but Senn got a grounder to end the inning. Head coach
Kenny Leonesio turned the game over to Hall, a freshman from Beyer High School in Modesto, for the final two innings.
After Hall gave up two hits in the eighth to let East Bay get winthin one run at 8-7, Hall gets two flyouts to end the inning. He earned the save with the help of a double play in the ninth and a grounder to end the game.
In the nightcap, East Bay scattered 14 hits for seven runs for the split. The Warriors had tied the game at 2-2 in the second with four hits that included doubles by
Nick Molina and Mulry and a RBI single by
Nathan Chunn.
But the Pioneers (10-4, 1-2 CCAA) used a three-run fourth to stay ahead and ultimately win the game.
The series swithces back to Turlock for the finale on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for Noon.
