TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State women's basketball team rallied from a 20-point deficit and challenged Cal State Dominguez Hills as the Toros held on for a 77-66 win to earn a share of the CCAA regular season title.
The Warriors, already locked in on a first round home game to start the CCAA Tournament, put up a valiant effort against the co-champions before falling on home court for just the second time this season. Stan State will head into the postseason with 16-10 overall and 12-8 CCAA records.
Stanislaus State, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, will host No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Arena for a chance to play in the semifinals at Stockton Arena next Friday. The Warriors are now 10-2 when playing on home floor with the only losses to CSUDH and co-CCAA winner Cal State East Bay. It is the Warriors' first home playoff game since 1991.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (20-8, 18-2 CCAA) will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament as the Toros won the three-way tiebreaker. UC San Diego will be No. 2, followed by Cal State East Bay.
On this Saturday senior night, it was a junior
Reana Hardin leading the team with 17 points — including four of the team's 11 three-pointers. Senior guard
Alysa Valentine had 13 points and
Riley Holladay, recovering from a illness as she sat out Thursday's game, had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Cassidy Sanders-Curry had 10 rebounds as the Warriors completely dominated the boards out-rebounding the Toros, 46-28.
A 12-0 Toros run late in the first quarter gave the visitors a 30-10 lead. The Warriors, though, chipped away at the game. Back to back three-pointers by Valentine at the end of first half cut the deficit to 48-37. Then, Holladay opened the second half with a trey to make it 48-40.
The Warriors took a brief lead after a 18-4 surge that spanned over the third and fourth quarters. Hardin made one of her three-pointers to give Stan State a 62-60 lead, but the Toros would not go away as they used a 7-0 run to regain control.
Sanders-Curry's layup at 1:53 turned out to be the Warriors' final points as CSUDH ended the game with eight unanswered points to seal the win.
Breanne Garcia led the Toros with 23 points and Ali Bettencourt had 12.
Stanislaus State will enter the CCAA Tournament with the highest seed for the program at No. 4. The Warriors were the seventh seed twice before in 2009 and 2011.
UC San Diego and Cal State East Bay both won Saturday night for the three-way tie for first place at 18-2.
