TURLOCK — It didn't come easy, but the Stanislaus State women's basketball team survived a late charge by Cal State Monterey Bay to win, 47-44, Friday night to improve to 8-0 at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Riley Holladay and
Ana Burch led the way with 13 and 12 points, respectively as the Warriors improved to 14-5 overall and 10-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stanislaus State, which had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Saturday at Chico State, remains in fourth place well ahead of fifth place Cal State San Bernardino.
Stan State had gone 2-9 in the last 11 games in the series but Friday night's home win marks the Warriors' eighth in 12 games played in Turlock.
The Warriors led by 10, 33-23, after a 10-3 run capped by a
Jasmine Washington jumper with 3:45 to go in the third quarter. But the Otters made a run.
Cal State Monterey Bay
(8-13, 4-10 CCAA) scored 12 unanswered points, going 5-for-8 from the field to take over the lead at 35-33.
Stanislaus State responded quickly with a 6-0 run highlighted by a Burch triple to lead 39-35. CSUMB got within one late but two Holladay free throws inside the 10 seconds mark sealed the win.
The Otters were ice cold to start the game. After making the opening shot, a three-pointer, CSUMB missed 12 straight tries. However, the Warriors were unable to run away with chilly shooting of their own. The Otters were held to just four points in the first half.
Brianna Tucker led the Otters with nine points on three three-pointers. Alex Sperling and Courtney Keaton each grabbed eight rebounds.
Stanislaus ended up shooting 35.4 percent for the game, thanks to a warm 47.8 percent shooting second half. The Otters finished with a 25.8 percent shooting night.
Taylor Faucett, Erike Larsen and Reana Hardin all had six rebounds each for Stanislaus.The Warriors host a key match-up on Saturday against Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers are tied with UC San Diego for second in the CCAA at 12-2 after Friday's 55-53 win at Chico State.
