Stanislaus sweeps twin bill to even series against Fresno Pacific

TURLOCK — With lots of offense and key situational hitting, the Stanislaus State baseball team rolled to two easy victories over Fresno Pacific to sweep the doubleheader on Saturday at Warrior Baseball Field.

Behind another great start by Jordan Kron, the Warriors won game one, 9-0. Then in game two, the Warriors scattered 10 hits to win 10-4 in seven innings to improve to 5-2 on the season with all five wins coming on home field.

Nick Ippolito went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader as part of the team's 18-hit display on the day when Stanislaus paid tribute to the 1976 Division III National Championship team, celebrating its 40th anniversary.

In all, the Warriors batted .327 (18-for 55) against seven different FPU pitchers on the night while the Stan State pitchers held the Sunbirds to 11-for-60 (.183) and just four runs. Stanislaus also scored six runs on sacrifice flies. Even when the Warriors tried to move runners with bunts, they reached on infield singles four times.

Jordan Kron threw a gem in game one, going eight solid innings with seven strikeouts. He gave up just four hits and was never really in any trouble. He got plenty of run support, too. Andrew Mallon hit a loud three-run bomb over the tall right-field wall in the third inning to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Stan State would score single runs in the fourth through sixth innings to make it 6-0.

Michael Chavarria homered, too, with a solo shot to left in the fifth inning.

FPU (2-3) pitchers then allow four free passes plus a wild pitch to give the Warriors three runs in the eighth to make it 9-0. The first eight Warrior batters in the lineup each had a hit with Mallon driving in four runs. His other RBI came on a grounder in the eighth.

In game two, the Warriors scored early and often with Ippolito going 3-for-4 and leadoff batter Scott Stetson going 2-for-4 and got on base in his four plate appearances.

With the score at 8-4 and two runners on base, freshman hurler Micah Hall entered and ended the Sunbirds rally by fanning Connor Wendorff. Hall would finished the game after 2 1/3 innings of shutout work to earn his first collegiate save.
