SAN BERNARDINO —
Jordan Kron helped the Stanislaus State baseball team return the favor on Saturday as the Warriors and Cal State San Bernardino each picked up a shutout win behind excellent pitching.
Kron and the Warriors got even in the nightcap as he threw a 2-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as Stan State blanked the Coyotes, 5-0, to earn the doubleheader split.
In game one, CSUSB's ace Tyler Wells threw a one-hit shutout for a 4-0 win. Wells, at one point, retired 20 straight Warriors.
Stanislaus State is now 12-8 overall and 5-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association heading into Sunday's series finale at 11 a.m. against the Coytoes (13-15) at Fiscalini Field.
Michael Chavarria homered again, this time a two-run bomb in the fourth, for his fourth of the year. That dinger gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead while Kron was dealing.
Kron retired the first 10 batters before a walk and had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning before Lopez doubled to start the inning. Lopez was left standing at second after a strikeout and two grounders. CSUSB also singled to start the eighth and reached second on an error, but Kron prevented any further damage.
Charlie Gaff led the Warriors with three hits while
Patrick Mulry and
Nathan Chunn each went 2-for-3. Mulry drove in two runs with a RBI single in the first and a double in the seventh.
Wells blanked the Warriors in the opener with his masterful gem — a one-hitter — a Gaff single with two outs in the second inning. Wells had seven strikeouts and a walk. He sat 20 consecutive in order until walking
Andrew Mallon in the ninth.
