Softball falls twice, in close games, to Chico State

TURLOCK — Chico State used the long balls again on Saturday as the Wildcats won two close games to sweep the doubleheader over Stanislaus State to win the series.

The Wildcats held off a late Warrior rally to win game one, 4-2. In the finale, Chico State had to employ starter Brooke Langeloh to again prevent Stan State to score late for a 6-5 decision.

Chico State improved its records to 20-10 overall and 17-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as it chases front-runner Humboldt State (19-1 CCAA). Meanwhile, the Warriors dropped to 16-15 overall and 13-13 in the CCAA, currently in sixth place in the standings, but is just 2 1/2 games out of fourth place for a CCAA Tournament berth.

In Saturday's game one, Chico State's Brynn Lesovsky hit a three-run homer in the third inning to help the Cats to a 4-0 lead. Stan State scored a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings to cut the deficit in half. However, the Warriors left two runners on in the sixth and threaten in the seventh but came up empty.

In the series finale, Desiree Gonzalez and Cyrena Taylor went back-to-back in the fifth to jump ahead to a 6-1 lead. Gonzalez's dinger was a three-run shot following three singles in the inning earlier.

Again, the Warriors mounded a comeback attempt. Stan State scored three times — all unearned runs — in the fifth and added another run in the sixth on a RBI double by Morgan Balestreri to get within a run. The rally was also made possible by a good relief appearance by Kylie Ragsdale, who held Chico scoreless with just two hits in the final 2 2/3 innings. Ragsdale started the first game and suffered the loss.

Ruby Quiralte went 3-for-4 in game one and walked in the second game to extend her to 21 games. She went 6-for-12 in the series with a homer and a double.

Brianna Martens and Jill Costa each also had two hits in game one and Balestreri was the leading hitter in the finale with a 2-for-3 game including that RBI double.
