TURLOCK —
Aldo Koutsoyanopulos singled in the game winner as Stanislaus State win a tight game, 2-1, over San Francisco State to start a key four-game series Friday afternoon.
Jordan Kron was once again masterful and
Nick Voumard, normally a starter, came in for a perfect ninth inning for a save as the Warriors improve to 19-18 overall and 10-15 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Kron and SF State (16-19, 9-15 CCAA) starter Ulices Moreno were locked in in a pitching duel early, but Kron came out on top. Kron lasted eight innings and gave up just a run on three hits with four strikeouts. Kron now has pitched eight innings in six of his last seven starts and improved to 7-4 on the season. He's the Warriors' first 7-game winner since Kory Wallace went 7-6 in 2010.
The junior right-hander from Manteca went just one batter over the minimum through six innings — that was a throwing error that allowed Carter Gambrell to reach in the third. In the fifth, a leadoff single by Dalton Pizzuti was erased on an inning-ending doubleplay hit by Gambrell.
SF State starter Moreno was replaced by Brent Montgomery in the sixth — and Montgomery shut the Warriors down with three strikeouts out of four batters befor the eighth.
With the score at 1-1 in the eight,
Patrick Mulry ledoff with a single through the right-side before moving over to second on a wild pitch. Then
Michael Chavarria bunted Mulry over to third, setting up Koutsoyanopulos' at-bat.
Koutsoyanopulos, who's been the hottest Stan State hitter lately, blooped a single to center to score Mulry for the go-ahead run. Koutsoyanopulos has now hit safely in eight straight (17-for-36) and are now batting .342.
Then, head coach
Kenny Leonesio turned to Voumard to close the game.
Voumard kept the ball down and got three groundouts to end the game to collect his first save.
Mulry finished the game 3-for-4 and
Gino Franceschetti was 2-for-4 with a double. Koutsoyanopulos also had two hits with a double.
The series moves to San Francisco for a doubleheader on Saturday before returning here to Turlcok for the finale on Sunday at Noon.
