Men's Soccer opens conference play in Southern California

California Collegiate Athletic Association competition begins this week as the Warriors embark on a trip to Southern California to begin the conference schedule at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday before facing Cal State L.A. on Sunday.

Series Notes: Stan State has had some recent success against Cal State Dominguez Hills after a long winless draught from 1998 to 2010. Since the 2011 season, the Warriors are 4-1-1 versus the Toros. CSUDH holds a 17-4-2 all-time record over Stanislaus. The Warriors have only won in Carson once, on Sept. 18, 2011 … Cal State L.A. has the upper hand lately holding a 3-0-2 record in the last five meetings. The teams have battled to two penalty kick shootout matches the last two years during the CCAA and NCAA tournaments. In 2014, the Warriors advanced to the CCAA title match by beating LA, 4-2, in PKs. The Golden Eagles hold a 20-4-3 all-time mark over Stanislaus.

CCAA Preseason Poll: Stan State was ranked No. 6 in the CCAA head coach's preseason poll as the Warriors are predicted to participate in the CCAA Championship tournament once again. Cal Poly Pomona was the favor to win the CCAA title, followed by Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Sonoma State and UC San Diego.

Regional Rankings: Cal State L.A. is ranked No. 4 and Cal State Dominguez Hills is No. 7 in the West Region, according to the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America). Cal State L.A. received votes in the national rankings.

Golden Gate All-Tourney: Three Warriors were named to the All-Tournament team last weekend at the Golden Gate Classic at SF State's Cox Stadium. Desmond Madrigal, Matthew Waldron and Manny Villegas earned All-Tournament honors.

Drawing for Ties: The Warriors tied in both contests last week in San Francisco with draws against Academy of Art (2-2) and Holy Names (1-1). They had also opened the season with a 2-2 tie on Sept. 1 against Fresno Pacific. The 2015 team had three ties all year while the 2014 team had six ties to finish 6-8-6 overall but still advanced to the CCAA conference tournament title tilt.

Opening CCAA Play on the Road: This is just the second time in six years that the Warriors are starting the conference schedule away from Warrior Stadium. The 2014 squad began in San Francisco and Monterey that season. Ths is also the first time since 2002 that Stanislaus opens CCAA play in Southern California.

Spread Offense: So far this season, nine different Warriors have figured in the scoring with either a goal or assist. Sean Baird leads the team with two goals and Sean Bender tops with two assists. There are four different goal-scorers.

About Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-1-1, 0-0-0 CCAA): The Toros won twice last week in Nampa, Idaho with wins over Northwest Nazarene (2-1) and Hawaii Hilo (2-0). Joey Chica leads the team with three scores and an assist. He scored all three goals in Nampa, including two against Northwest Nazarene.

About Cal State L.A. (1-0-3, 0-0-0 CCAA): After opening with a 6-2 win over Saint Martin's, the Golden Eagles have played to three ties against Point Loma (1-1), Cal Poly Pomona (0-0) and Concordia Irvine (0-0) … Dennis Rognstad and Steven Eberle each has two goals to lead the team.
