Stingy Sonoma State edges Stanislaus State, 2-1

TURLOCK — Against the stingiest defense in the CCAA, the Warriors were not able to mustard up enough offense as 22nd ranked Sonoma State defeated Stanislaus State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.

Sonoma State won for the fourth straight conference match as the Seawolves stayed undefeated in the California Collegiate Athletic Association at 4-0-0. SSU is 6-1-1 overall.

The Warriors, playing against eight Sonoma defenders on the attack, fell to 6-3-0, 1-3-0 CCAA.

"We gave a full effort for 90 minutes today and that's all you can ask from your team," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "Sonoma created very few chances. They had 16 shots but most of those were from 30 yards out. While we never like to lose, overall I'm very pleased with the performance and effort."

The Seawolves had not allowed a score in CCAA matches until the Warriors' goal. Sonoma State also snapped a winless streak against Stanislaus State at eight. The Warriors had gone 4-0-3 against SSU in seven previous meetings.

Stan State goalkeeper Haley Crook was certainly tested today as she saw 16 Seawolve shots (12 on goal) with a career-best nine saves. Clarissa Sandoval also had a defensive save, stepping in front of a a Kristyn Lerma shot in the 59th minute.

Freshman Rayana Plancarte scored her first collegiate goal in the 85th minute when a Sonoma State defender wasn't able to clear away the ball. Plancarte shot it over goalkeeper Allison Hadidian who barely had a finger on it to make it 2-1.

"We just needed to be more confident in our build up. We knew they were going to come out pressing and unfortunately we didn't handle it well a couple of times." Bolton said.

Sonoma State had gone up 1-0 in the 17th minute on a Dayna Dolcini's goal from a Miriam Bloom corner kick. The ball was deflected off a couple of players to Dolcini. SSU's second goal was netted in the 49th minute when Madison Minton intercepted a Crook clearing pass. Minton blasted over Crook for an empty net score.

The Warriors have a bye week coming up from CCAA play but will host UC Santa Cruz for a non-conference contest next Sunday night at 6 p.m.
