FRESNO — The Stanislaus State women's soccer team remains perfect in 2016 as the Warriors blanked Fresno Pacific, 1-0, Monday night to spoil FPU's season opener.
The Warriors also stay undefeated against the Sunbirds as they improved to 7-0-0 in the head-to-head series.
"
FPU came out with great intensity. It was their first game of the season and you could tell they were energized. We matched the intensity level," head coach Gabriel Bolton said.
Mikayla Clifford's goal in the 60th minute was the only score on the night as Stan State improved to 3-0-0 heading into this week's two home matches at Warrior Stadium.
Jade Poon, who is coming off a tremendous opening weekend with three goals and an assist, adds another assist to her numbers Monday night. She started the scoring play, crossing the ball into the box to
Gabby Squarcia, who tapped it to Clifford for the finish. It is Clifford's first goal of the season — and 11th of her career.
Stanislaus State dominated the second half on offense, out-shooting FPU, 8-3 to end the night with a 14-10 shot advantage.
Warrior goalkeeper
Haley Crook earned six saves on the night — her best outing of the season so far. FPU had a chance to go ahead in the 24th minute on a penalty kick but Crook denied a Mariah Montoya attempt.
"Haley has played very well and made a great save on the penalty kick. The entire back line was outstanding tonight," Bolton said.
Stanislaus next plays Friday night when the Warriors host Western Oregon at 7 p.m. for their home opener.
"
I'm extremely proud of that effort. We played our best game of the season and it was the third road game in five days," added Bolton.
