Stan State, CSUMB played to heated 3-3 draw on a cold night

TURLOCK — In a heated battle on the pitch on a cold late October night, the Stanislaus State and Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer teams settled on a 3-3 draw after 110 minutes of play Friday at Warrior Stadium.

The Warriors played in their seventh overtime match this season (1-1-5) — and second in consecutive Fridays — and came out with a single point. Stan State is now 5-4-5 overall and 2-3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. With 10 points to its tally, Stan State's match against Cal State East Bay on Sunday became even more critical as the regular season winds down.

Cal State Monterey Bay leaves Turlock with a 2-10-1, 1-7-1 records — and the Otters seemed pleased to settle with the tie.

On an eventful Friday night, after the women's team played 102 minutes, the late night contest on a cold evening perhaps played a part in the rough contest. The teams played physical all night and it showed with 44 fouls (22 each) and a total of 11 cautions, including a red card as a result of a second yellow issued to an Otter.

After trailing 2-1, the Warriors scored twice within 75 seconds to go up 3-2 with goals by Bradlee Taylor and Sean Baird.

But the Otters rallied to tie the match in the 79th minute on a goal by Jose Gomes.

Ahmed Mohammed had given the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute off a a corner kick from Taylor. Mohammed finished a header touch from Matthew Waldron on the scoring play.

That score stood for 22 minutes until Steven Moreno scored to tie the match. Luis Lopez would give the Otters a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute until the Stan State barrage of chances that finally resulted in two scores in a short period of time.

In the end, the Warriors out-shot CSUMB 19-11, forcing Otter goalkeeper Jesus Ochoa to pick up six saves.

Sunday's match against Cal State East Bay will be the annual Senior Day contest where nine Warriors will be recognized prior to their final home game.
