McLaughlin golden again as Warriors beat CSUMB in double OT

TURLOCK — For the second straight match, Shawna McLaughlin was golden. The senior finished off the Otters two minutes into the second overtime period as Stanislaus State took a 2-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Warriors picked up the much-needed three points in the CCAA standings to continue their late-season run. Stan State is now just one point out of six place after winning four consecutive conference matches. The Warriors are now 9-4-2 overall and 4-4-1 in league play after starting out 0-4-1.

"That was a gritty performance. We showed a ton of resilience and played some quality soccer," head coach Gabriel Bolton said.

Stanislaus remains undefeated at 6-0-2 in home matches this season. The Warriors are now 24-3-1 all-time against Monterey Bay.

McLaughlin worked hard for the game-winner. Selia Torres' corner kick was perfectly placed in front of the net for a Jenna Zuniga header bouncer that was blocked by a defender. McLaughlin wrapped herself around the CSUMB goalkeeper Alyssa Noh to kick the rebound shot in for the win at 102:12.

It was McLaughlin's second consecutive game-winner. She scored the lone goal in last Sunday's 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona.

"Selia stepped up and took a fantastic corner kick. Shawna committed everything she had to finishing that goal," Bolton said on the golden goal. "Offensively we created lots of chances. I think they might have to repaint the cross bars after that match."

A number of Warrior attempts hit the cross bar in the match, most notably Jade Poon's header try in the 81st minute.

Stan State had tie the game in the 12th minute as Sadie Montague bent a corner kick into the upper V over the reach of Noh. That goal erased an early shocker when Cal State Monterey Bay scored just 57 seconds into the match on a Dio Ruiz blast.

Noh kept the Otters (5-7-3, 2-6-1 CCAA) in the game with a stellar performance minding the net. She earned seven saves against the Warriors 16 total shots (nine on goal). On the other side, the Warriors limited CSUMB to just seven shot with one on frame.

"Defensively we did a good job of keeping their speedy forward in check and only giving up one shot on goal the entire game," Bolton said.

Stanislaus State will wrap-up its home schedule on Sunday, on Senior Day, against Cal State East Bay at 11:30 a.m.
