CARSON — Stanislaus State did what it needed to do on Saturday to have a chance to qualify for the CCAA Tournament. But, the Warriors didn't get the help they needed.
The Warriors took cared of business with an amazing 4-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills with four second half goals. Then, they needed a tie from Hayward. Moments after the Stan State match, Cal State San Marcos scored the sudden victory goal at 105:07 to beat Cal State East Bay, 3-2. CSUEB had tie the match twice to force overtime.
Those decisions ended Stan State's late season run towards the postseason tournament. The Warriors went 6-1 in their final seven CCAA matches.
Stanislaus State completed the season 11-5-2 overall and 6-5-1 in the CCAA with 19 points (1.58 points per match average). Cal State San Marcos will finish with a 1.72 ppm as the fifth seed and Cal Poly Pomona, which won its finale on Friday, is the sixth seed at 1.66.
"Obviously we are disappointed to not make the postseason," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "This is the first time in a very long time that we will be watching from home.  However this is a young team that won 11 games this season so I have no doubt we will bounce back next year.
UC San Diego (2.82) and Cal State L.A. (1.91) received the first round bye as the top two seeds while the third spot went to Sonoma State (1.90).
In Saturday's match against the Toros (4-10-2, 3-7-2 CCAA) the Warriors dominated the second half after the first half stalemate. Seniors
Gabriela Vargas and
Shawna McLaughlin scored the first two goals within 82 seconds of each other for a 2-0 lead. Both goals, at 50:13 and 51:35, were assisted by
Sadie Montague.
Montague would assist on a third goal, a second one from the corner kick, when
Jenna Zuniga finished it off in the 70th minute. Lastly,
Micaela Brewer made it 4-0 with an assisted goal in the 82nd minute.
"We played an outstanding second half today. It was great to see the team come together to give everything they had," Bolton said.
Haley Crook was dominant in goal, picking up eight saves, in back to back matches.
Stan State out-shot CSUDH 15-13 for the match but had a 12-7 advantage in the second half that led to the four goals.
"We will miss our five seniors very much. They have been a special part of all our lives," concluded Bolton as Vargas, McLaughlin,
Jade Poon,
Clarissa Sandoval and
Mireya Magana end their collegiate careers.
